AMITYVILLE, N.Y., Dec. 29, 2007(AP)

Police arrested a man on suspicion of stealing a GPS receiver after the device apparently gave him away.
Amityville police say they stopped the 33-year-old man early Saturday after they spotted him trying to ride a bicycle while carrying several items, including a car GPS unit.
Police say the cyclist gave evasive answers to questions, and when the officer pressed the home button on the GPS, the unit displayed a nearby address. The resident of that home told police the device was his.

LAFAYETTE, Ind., Dec. 29, 2007(AP)

A woman whose diamond ring vanished while she was making fudge for a bake sale was despondent after scouring her home and finding no sign of it.
But Linda Vancel recently got a sweet surprise: A relative of the woman who bought the fudge found the ring when he bit into a piece of the candy.
"It's a very sentimental ring," Vancel said of the white gold ring her mother, who died 15 years ago, wore for 50 years before passing it on.
Linda Rhoades bought the fudge during a bake sale in West Lafayette. She took some of it to her sister-in-law's father, Charles "Red" Matson, in hopes of cheering him up after recent health problems.
When Matson snacked on a piece of the fudge, he bit into something hard _ the ring.Rhoades said Matson called her and said, "Well, Linda, it's got chocolate all over it, but it doesn't look adjustable. It's got a stone that's really shiny."
Vancel said she had scoured her home, even dumping the trash can on the kitchen floor to sort through the rubbish for the ring. Finally she thought to track down Rhoades and sent her a long-shot e-mail, which Rhoades returned as soon as she got back from vacation.
"It renews your faith in people," Vancel said. "Sometimes there's so much negative in the world, to hear a story like this is reassuring."

Pot at the pass gets chain installer arrested

Seattle Times staff reporter

A Bellevue chain installer was found smoking pot Thursday to pass the time as he waited to assist drivers with their snow chains near Snoqualmie Pass, according to the State Patrol. The 27-year-old man was arrested for possession of marijuana and smoking a controlled substance, according to the State Patrol. The man was parked off Interstate 90 in a truck with a 26-year-old Issaquah man, said Trooper Jeff Merrill. Both were permitted to help drivers install chains and were parked in a state-designated chain-installation area, where vendors set up operations and charge a fee for chain assistance. The installers waited in the truck for snowy conditions to set in. At about 2:30 p.m., when the forecast showed it wouldn't be snowing hard for a few hours, a trooper went by to tell them they should return later. When the trooper arrived at the truck, he could see smoke coming out of it and noted it had a peculiar odor, said Merrill. The Bellevue man, who was smoking marijuana, sheepishly turned over a "substantial amount" of marijuana in a bag, said Merrill. The other installer, who was asleep behind the wheel, was not found to be impaired and was released. The Bellevue man was cited and has since been released, but both men are no longer permitted to install chains along the freeway.

Idaho Fire Crew's Tater Tots Start Blaze

Infamous Potatoes: Tater Tots Start Blaze In Idaho Firehouse Kitchen While Crew Out On A Call

(AP)

A fire station crew must be a little embarrassed by the way some of this state's famous potatoes got fried.
Boise firefighters returning from a medical call had to turn their hose on the firehouse kitchen after an overheated pan full of Tater Tots melted and set some cabinets ablaze.
The Christmas Eve fire at Station 8 was quickly extinguished, with no injuries. No damage estimate was available.
Investigators were trying to determine why a computerized safety system that automatically turns off appliances when firefighters are called away apparently had not been activated. Assistant Fire Chief Dave Hanneman said the three firefighters on duty might have forgotten to use it.

You think someone needs a littel more training in fire safety

W.Va. Cop Says Woman Wiped Nose On Him

W.Va. Woman Accused Of Wiping Her Nose On Police Officer's Shirt Charged With Battery

DUNBAR, W.Va., Dec. 28, 2007(AP)

Sometimes you need a police officer; sometimes you need a tissue. Confuse the two, and it could cost you.A woman in this Charleston suburb was charged with battery on a police officer after the officer said she wiped her nose on the back of his shirt.
Cpl. S.E. Elliott said he had arrested the 36-year-old woman last week after seeing her slap a man, bite him on the elbow and spit in his face. Elliott said the woman wiped her nose on him as he led her into the police station for booking on a charge of domestic battery.
Battery on a police officer is defined as intentionally making physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with an officer.
